How Do I... Create a Hamptons-Style Garden?
It's one of the hottest gardening trends that's timeless too. Read how to give your garden a sophisticated Hamptons look
In this practical series, we ask experts to answer your burning home and garden questions. Here, landscaping expert and Adbri Masonry brand ambassador Jason Hodges reveals how to create a sophisticated, coastal-inspired Hamptons retreat – whatever the size of your outdoor space.
Do I need a big garden?
While the Hamptons gardens we see on television are often huge, with pool houses and monster hedges, you can make the look work in a garden of any size.
They key is to choose elements of the Hamptons look that will work in the space you already have. For example, rather than three-metre-high hedging, introduce that same sense of formality on a smaller scale with buxus balls.
What are the key elements?
- Symmetry.
- Uncluttered styling.
- Rich, green plants.
- Classic flowers such as hydrangeas, orchids and gardenias.
- Hedging or buxus balls.
- Turf (for a lush, broad-leaf lawn, consider Sir Walter Buffalo turf).
- Paved areas to accommodate a dining or sofa setting.
- A colour palette of greys, whites and blues in planting, paving and soft furnishings.
How should I arrange plants?
If you have the space, garden beds constructed from small retaining blocks in a light, natural colour around the perimeter of your garden are perfect for plants.
For smaller gardens, balconies or courtyards, create an ordered arrangement using potted plants. I like to repurpose vintage pots in a Hamptons-style garden – simply sand them back before whitewashing them or coating them in grey. They'll sit beautifully with the rich greens of a Hamptons look.

What about pavers?
A beautiful Hamptons garden takes quite a lot of effort to maintain, which is why it's wise to incorporate practical and low-maintenance paved areas. White pavers can be uncomfortably bright on the eyes and time-consuming to care for – instead, opt for mid-tone paving in a pale- or mid-grey tone. Choose large-format pavers for a sophisticated look.
What furniture and accessories will complete this look?
- Hamptons-style gardens are ideal for entertaining. Add in a dining setting or a comfortable sofa setting where you can relax with friends and family.
- Add in plenty of comfortable throws and cushions in tactile, natural materials such as linen and cotton. Think navy, neutral, white and plenty of stripes for a casual yet sophisticated vibe.
- Don't forget outdoor lighting so you can enjoy the space at night.
How much work is involved?
Quite a lot. You'll need to commit to ongoing maintenance in order to retain the neat, ordered aesthetic of a Hamptons-style garden – particularly hedging and lawns.
